If you have a furry friend in Berlin, it is now mandatory to register your dog in the city. I know what you’re thinking – another trip to the Bürgeramt, right? Noooo!
Luckily, you don’t have to go farther than the mailbox. You can register your pooch online (17.50 Euros), over the phone or by mail (26.50 Euros). All doggos living in Berlin before the turn of the year have until July 1st 2022 to get registered.
If you’re interested in welcoming a fuzzy companion in the future, take heed. Until now, in Berlin, it was only necessary to register certain breeds: Pitbulls, American Staffordshire Terriers, Bull Terriers, or mixes of these sorts. This process is still necessary for those breeds. It costs 30 euros and involves a trip to the Ordnungsamt. You’re also required to report any change of address within the city or deregister if you leave. All other breeds now fall under the first-mentioned registration.
Taxes for your pup remain the same – Hundesteuer costs 120 euro per year for 1 dog and 180 euro per year for each additional fluff. There are however some exceptions, mostly for service dogs, but even adopted puppers are exempt from taxes for FIVE years 😍. You have 1 month to register your new friend at the Finanzamt.
